Amsterdam & the Smart City Project
From its humble beginnings as a 13th-century fishing village on a river bed to its current
role as a major hub for business, tourism and culture, Amsterdam has had a strong
tradition as a centre of culture and commerce. In recent years Amsterdam has also
become known as a model for what it takes to become a “smart city,” utilizing
information technology to improve city services. In 2016, Amsterdam won Europe’s
Capital of Innovation award by the European Commission. Increasing numbers of
major cities recognize the opportunity to improve urban life with data analytics, and
some are exploring how to use data to develop more integrated services and a more
sustainable footprint. Data integration presents great opportunities, of course, but the
challenge is that city managers must collaborate with a diverse group of stakeholders
— in both the public sector and private sector — to achieve those goals.
Nearby Attractions - Canals, culture and the city’s best shopping
From the moment you step outside the lobby of our central Amsterdam hotel, so many
experiences await you. Take a stroll to the busy Dam Square to see the Royal Palace
and the Nieuwe Kerk, a 15th Century church. Then take a horse-drawn carriage to tour
the Old City before dining at one of the numerous cafes near the waterway.
Along the southern canal belt, spend an afternoon shopping on Kalverstraat and admire
the colorful blooms at the world’s only floating flower market, Bloemenmarkst. Don’t
forget to make time to explore the cities world class museums including the
Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House.
Amsterdam Christmas Markets
Amsterdam during this time of year is absolutely stunning. Christmas trees,
decorations and colorful lights combined with the beautiful canals turn the city into a
fairytale. Beginning from the heart of Amsterdam, Centraal Station and Dam Square, the
Christmas markets are not only spread across the entire city. The whole scenery cannot
help but make you feel the holiday spirit.
